Some of the most dangerous, unbiblical theology is running rampant in the church today. See if you recognize these teachings:

  • People are basically good.
  • If people do wrong things, it’s because of their environment or because of other people.
  • People are not responsible to God for their thoughts, motives, words, and actions.
  • There is no literal hell.
  • Jesus is not the only way to God and heaven.
  • Everyone will end up in heaven eventually somehow.
  • People can decide what is “true for them.”
  • There is no absolute truth.
  • The Bible is not all trustworthy or true.
  • The Bible is not the inerrant Word of God.

These are false teachings that lead people away from God and truth.

These kinds of beliefs bring about apostasy—a falling away from God and the truth of the Bible. That is what we are seeing right now in the church and America. Apostasy is a deliberate turning away from the truth of God to lies and delusions.

The Bible is the source of absolute truth. The only way we can know the difference between truth and lies is to compare an idea or teaching to the Bible.

If People Are Essentially Good…

  • We would not need a Savior.
  • We would not need the Bible.
  • We would not need to share Jesus.
  • We would not need to make disciples.
  • Jesus could have stayed in heaven having a wonderful time in all His glory.
  • We would not need to repent.
  • We would have to teach children to lie, hurt others, steal, envy, hate, have pride, and commit sin.

The Bad News: We Are All Sinners

The Bible teaches that we have all inherited a sinful nature from Adam and that as soon as we are able, we all willfully choose to sin (deviate from God’s standard of holy perfection) in our thoughts, motives, words, and actions.

  • For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Rom. 3:23
  • Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all have sinned. Rom. 5:12

This offends our pride. We want to believe we are good enough to earn heaven on our own without any help. We don’t like to humbly admit that we are in spiritual poverty and desperately in need of a powerful Savior.

More Bad News for Us: God DOES Hold Us Each Accountable for Every Motive, Thought, Word, and Action.

We can’t blame our parents, upbringing, teachers, spouse, kids, government, society, church, race, gender, socioeconomic status, or anything/anyone else when we stand before the one holy God of the universe.

We will be completely exposed before Him. The books will be opened. We will have nowhere to run or hide. He will accept no excuses.

Anyone whose life is not covered by the blood of Jesus will have no justification for all the wrong they have done. They will have no way to pay for it except through eternal separation from God in a very literal hell.

  • I tell you, on the day of judgment, people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. Matt. 12:36-37
  • So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Rom. 14:12
  • For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 2 Cor. 5:10

Even More Bad News: Hell Is Real!

Jesus spoke of hell more than He spoke of heaven.

  • And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt. 10:28
  • But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death. Rev. 21:8
  • And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Rev. 20:15

The Good News Is: Jesus Can Save Us from Our Sin, the Second Death, and Hell If We Turn to Him in Faith!

He loves us so much that He would rather come take our place and live the perfect life we couldn’t live for us and die the awful death we deserved in our place so He could make a way for us to be with Him. Can we even begin to imagine the depths of that kind of love?

  • For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom. 6:23
  • But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom. 5:8
  • For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
  • Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

When we turn from our sin, receive Jesus as our Savior, and decide to live for Him as Lord of our lives from that moment on, we belong to Him. We become followers of Christ.

We yield to His leading and worship Him. We follow Him from that moment on, inviting Him to transform us and make us more like Himself. This involves humility. It involves realizing we can’t save ourselves. It involves embracing the offense of the cross to our pride.

More Good News: Jesus Gives Us a New Heavenly Nature!

When we come to Jesus by faith, yielding our lives to His Lordship, He gives us a new heavenly nature. We no longer have to be slaves to our old sinful nature. He crucified that on the cross with Him.

We no longer find sin appetizing. We hate it and we long to obey the Lord out of gratitude and joy for all He has done for us.

Now we can live as though we are dead to sin and alive to God through Jesus. He gives us the power, His resurrection power, to overcome sin, death, and the grave! He gives us the power to live holy lives of love that honor the Lord.

The Best News: Heaven Is Real!

Jesus promises that all who love Him and belong to Him will be with Him forever in paradise enjoying Him, enjoying others who love Him, and reigning with Him.

  • The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Rom. 8:16-17
  • To an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 1 Pet. 1:4
  • Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Matt. 25:34

The Truth Is:

  • We each have a sinful nature and we all desperately need a supernatural Savior.
  • We do wrong things because we are sinners whose hearts are bent to rebel against God.
  • God holds each of us responsible for everything we think, say, and do. There will be justice in the end. Either Jesus will pay for our sin debt or we will pay for it ourselves in the lake of fire, the second death
  • There is a literal hell. It is a place of separation from God for those who reject Jesus and His incredibly gracious, generous plan of salvation.
  • Jesus is the only way to God. If there were another way, He would have found it. He prayed about that in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before He was crucified for us. There was no other way.
    • Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
    • Jesus teaches there is absolute truth. All real truth is found in Him. “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32.
  • The Bible, the Word of God, is true.
    • All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. 2 Tim. 3:16-17
    • For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Heb. 4:12
  • God’s Word is powerful!
    • So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Rom. 10:7
    • So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Isa. 55:11
